Wigmore Castle

The highlight of my week occurred on Tuesday when I found myself in the region of Wigmore Castle in the Welsh Marches, once home to Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March (1287 - 1330). I have wanted to go here since reading Ian Mortimers book about Roger, The Greatest Traitor. 

Roger was an amazing man, warrior, and leader of men however he is probably most remembered for his part in the forced abdication of Edward II and alleged involvement in the murder of the former King, a topic I won't debate here. 

To me however he was a true historical hero. Unfortunately in the end absolute power corrupted absolutely and I believe he lost sight of his initial goal, which for years was to preserve the interests of the Country, but I am proud to know his story and so happy to finally have visited his home. I had the place to myself for the duration of my visit and I found Wigmore to be powerful and peaceful.

I grabbed this shot one day on our camping trip. The buzzard was a regular visitor to the field and had just delighted me with a close fly over. He hovered over my head for ages and I allowed myself the pleasure of just watching before I decided it was worth a mad dash for my camera and a quick lens change. My big lens takes better shots from the tripod as the small movements of my hand and breathing make for blurred images but I was pleased to be able to get this anyway. I found out yesterday that Joni over at My Piece of Heaven has closed her blog. She runs a farm with her husband and also works as a medical transcriber. Apparently Joni is increasing her hours at work and she has decided that with the extra work and the farm to run she won't be able to fit blogging in, at least not to the standard that she wishes to. I completely understand but I am sad that I won't be able to visit her blog anymore. Joni posted everyday and displayed amazing photos of the beautiful and varied wildlife in her part of the world, including her new puppy Cooper! I am really happy that things are going well for Joni but I am sorry that I did not get a chance to tell her how much I valued her and her blog before she went. It's a funny thing this virtual socialising, connections are made between people.
