Creative Tuesdays #3 - Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore

The current theme for Creative Tuesdays is 'Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore' with the brief being to create a scene conveying that you are no longer in quiet and comfortable surroundings. I decided after much deliberation to utilise the film the theme title is taken from and have produced this.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My.

The Wizard of Oz was a very significant film in my childhood and my sister and I watched it every year, often from behind a pillow. I don't know if anyone remembers but a few years ago they used the Wicked Witch of the West in a series of adverts and she still scares me! So I decided to let myself get lost in remembering the film and all of the images and feelings that came to mind. The line 'lions and tigers and bears oh my' kept popping into my head and as such this piece was born.

I imagine anyone would feel they were no longer in quiet and comfortable surroundings if they walked into a wooded glade and found these three however in addition to that drawing this has taken me out of my comfort zone in art. This is version 2 of the drawing as I messed up version 1 and had to start again which was a good process and lesson for me. I also made a huge mess of version 2 at one point and had to rub a lot out to put it right.

I am quite happy with the final piece, although there is room for improvement, but producing it has been a lot of fun and again a great learning curve.

This piece was drawn with coloured pencils. To join Creative Tuesdays or view other participants click on the banner below.

  3. it's great that you do something that you do not normally do, so that is one way of doing something new and different. wonderfully entry for CT. I think I would run righ out of there if I see those three creatures but the way you've drawn them, they appear as if they belong together, like a family perhaps.

    have a lovely day.

I have a sad melodie in my ear, something like "the lion talked to me tonight....", yes we must all be strong to have enough courage for daily life!

  7. Dancin'-- I think you did a FABULOUS job on this! Great interpretation and so well rendered too. I particularly love those trees in the background for that extra sense of beckoning and intrigue. Very well done. So love seeing how all of us will interpret a theme and this is one classic reason why. Well done! And yes, that witch is still scary and I do recall those adverts too!
